Welcome to Oh Messy Life, the column that dares to ask “What if we spend it all while we’re breathing?”

  • Leah and I are planning our honeymoon in the South Pacific. First stop: Fiji. Will we blow a bag on an over-water bure? Will my bad ears burst while snorkeling? Follow this space to find out.
👀
  • Totally unrelated: it’s never a bad time to upgrade your Pursuits subscription.
  • I missed it last week but trusted consumer-slash-health reporter (and Savannah, GA booster) Amanda Mull is bidding The Atlantic adieu, and taking her talents to Business Week. Note to self: I still need to try a boiled peanut…
  • Somewhat under the radar because of “Dem Oilers,” but the WNBA is coming to Edmonton this weekend. Raeland and ICYT are celebrating the pre-season game with a two-day, nightlife-forward pop up celebration featuring drinks, dancing, and a “sneaker bar.” RSVP for FREE here.
  • If you’re in New York, Overcast Kid #001 Chris Payne will be chatting with Leslie Simon about their interviews with big emo bands of Yore (FOB, MCR, P!ATD, P’more, etc). FREE tickets here.
  • When I grow up, I want to vacation like Cheyenne Roundtree. As you may recall, she spends her days reporting on some pretty heavy sh*t for Rolling Stone, which is why I was happy to see her OOO and getting some much-needed R&R in Europe. She writes:

“Hello from Sardinia! It’s been a whistle-stop tour after pit stops in London to see family and a girls trip to Paris. I’ve managed to squeeze in some great meals and wine at the De Beauvoir Arms and Dan’s near Islington, and although I had no personal luck, spent too many hours vintage shopping in Paris’ 11th arrondissement.

Two hectic cities back-to-back calls for beach time, so Italy it was. I’m one night in at the southern costal town of Villasimius, and the local favorite restaurant Sa Tankitta is a must try for their whole fishes. I plan to spend the rest of my trip exploring the island’s hidden beaches, searching for the best calamari and enjoying (several) Aperol spritzes.

  • Here in Vancouver, my friend Rhianna mentioned she likes this column and its little “tidbits.” She also called it Messies LOL.
  • And I purchased Joe Perri’s new photo book, Suddenly & Somehow Brighter. Read all about in yesterday’s interview.

PROPER CHUNE

  • Challengers is everything you want from a major motion picture. Hot stars, solid script, and a cool soundtrack, courtesy of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. This song is perfect for running, dancing, writing, and (if director Luca Guadagnino has any say) “unending homoerotic desire”.
